What actually matters
1. Filter, pod or espresso. Filter makes a jug for several people. Pod makes one cup fast. Espresso makes a short, strong shot. Decide this before anything else.
2. The cost per cup. Filter coffee is the cheapest per cup. Pods cost several times more and lock you into one brand.
3. Thermal jug or hotplate. A hotplate keeps the coffee hot by cooking it, which turns it bitter within twenty minutes. A thermal jug keeps it drinkable for hours.
4. The grinder. Coffee goes stale in minutes once ground. If you care about taste, a grinder matters more than the machine.
5. Descaling. Every machine needs it. In a hard-water area, this is what kills machines early.

Is an espresso machine worth it?
Only if you drink espresso or milk drinks. For long black coffee, a filter machine does the same job for less.
Do I need a grinder?
If you care about taste, yes. Ground coffee loses its aroma within hours.
